Langdale Fells 4-day backpack

Sunset on Little Stand tarnA superb 4-day mountain circuit of the Langdale fells with an extension to Scafell Pike.

The weather was truly astonishing for mid February: four days of unbroken sunshine and very warm indeed once the sun was well up, and we walked in base layers for much of the day. We saw one lad by Angle Tarn wearing only shorts and boots with no top at all!. Our hopes were high of a good temperature inversion on this trip and there was one, but there was only a weak thin layer of inverted cloud. Nevertheless the combination of winter clarity and summer warmth made this an incredible backpack to remember. Only a few very small patches of snow remained now.

Nice and simple: Simply sensational walk. Looks like wonderful weather and masterful photography.

I do like the OS mapping; is it open to everybody yet Geoff?

Thanks for the report - Wonderful food for thought for our next trip

    Thanks Alan, a fantastic walk.

Yes, the OS OpenSpace mapping is available to everyone now, but is still officially in the alpha-test stage I think. Although not as neat as having the map images here on my site, it does save me a lot of work with Photoshop and gives the user an accurate route and more control.

If you are thinking of using it, the terms forbid any financial gain, directly or indirectly, from any page of your entire website. I’m not sure how this applies to your particular case of charity fundraising.

Amazing photos! Looks like you had a fabulous few days. Can this really be the Lakes in February?

Fabulous indeed, it was so mind-boggingly warm out of the breeze that your brain has trouble accepting it. We found ourselves looking at each other and saying ‘there’s definitely something wrong here, it can’t possibly be like this in mid February!’. Anyway we’ll never forget it - incredible.

I saw another indicator of the early Spring on the Yr Wyddfa trip four days later: frogspawn in a pool in Snowdonia, on 20th. February. The newts have been up and about in our pond at home since late January.

Geoff - remarkable. And, as ever, I particualry enjoy your approach to picking those w/camp spots.
Just shows you don’t have to cover high mileage each day to have a truly great time

We see so many great secluded camping spots we want to pitch on all of them some day, I can’t understand why so many make a beeline for the well used ones.

Our mountain backpacks have got shorter by necessity as time goes on but enjoyment has increased if anything, it’s great not to be rushed.
