The Buttermere Fells

Hay Stacks tarn & High CragA circuit of all the fells around Buttermere lake, an excellent route that we have curiously never seen described anywhere else despite being a pretty obvious one. The first day was sunny but very hazy, on the second day it was much clearer and not a cloud in the sky. Nearly all the snow has gone now, the only the Helvellyn range retained a light dusting.

We originally devised and completed this round as a day walk (years ago in younger and fitter days!).

This was a cold weather test for the Hilleberg Akto, more of which later.

Superb pics! Just noticed the last one. Mellbreak. Interesting. Is this the same name as Meall Breac (speckled hill) ?

    Thanks very much Alistair.
I’ve never thought about the name but that sounds highly likely. I’ve noticed similar derivations between English and Welsh hill names.

I am always in awe of your weekends out, Geoff. Fabulous walks, magnificent pitches and amazingly good weather!

Cheers! (Could you tell me when you are next due out? I will arrange a trip for the same weekend!)

Thanks again Alan. We are off for Thursday and Friday this week, don’t know where yet - probably somewhere in Wales. It looks good, maybe the last good days before it all goes pear-shaped for Xmas.
