Main site update: Gear Lists subsection added

Gear Lists subsectionPeople like gear lists don’t they?. I always think they get too hung up about gear generally, nevertheless it can be illuminating to see what’s in other backpacks around the land and how other people tackle it, and in particular the weights involved.

I’ve been meaning to get a simplified version of my Excel gear spreadsheet onto the site for a while now, and when Robin posted his gear list for a particular recent Cairngorms trip over at BlogPackingLight it prompted me to get the job done.

The lists are in a new subsection ‘Gear Lists’ of the Gear&Tech section of the main site. I have three separate lists in one table indicated by coloured columns for different periods of the year:- 1: Summer 2: Spring/Autumn 3: Winter. The lists are for solo trips.

The lists include figures for the Base Weights (along with my definition of what that means) and also Total Weights including food but - necessarily - excluding water. I hope I haven’t forgotten anything.

I obviously carry too many clothes! Next trip I’m looking to go much lighter 6-7kg base weight. I can’t see myself going much below that. Always interesting to see what others carry.

    Robin,
I don’t understand the need for much (if any) extra clothing apart from socks, but we all have a different perspective. Actually I do in some cases, it’s so that on a long backpack they can appear halfway respectable in pubs.

    Mike,
Hello there, I’m about to add your blog to my Blogroll. I look forward to seeing your list.

I hope I haven’t opened the door to the - ahem -lunatic fringe here, present company excepted of course. If certain USA trends are followed here, we’ll have people crowing about how they backpack for a few days with a 25l pack and other insanities.

Geoff, I always carry too many clothes as I like to have a spare set if I get wet and I’m paranoid about getting cold as I suffered from the early stages of exposure once (by not carrying sufficient warm clothing). However, I’m probably going to do a bit of the South Downs Way where exposure etc seems unlikley so I’ll cut the spare stuff right down!
