An open ended walk with the main target of the new 500m summit of Moelfre, a grand hill forming an isolated outlying spur of the South Western Rhinogydd.
The route follows the splendid riverside path from Tal-y-bont along the Afon Ysgethin to Pont Fadog and leaves it for a good track through pastoral land to ascend Moelfre from the south.
Like the last trip to the South West Mawddach on which I suffered a bad fall and gashed my eye socket – now healing remarkably well – this was another trip allowing for up to three days but soon curtailed. An ongoing ankle problem became considerably worse on the final steep ascent, also walking performance seemed to have nosedived again to really worrying levels. Assessing the possibilities at the pitch, we decided that none of our route ideas would be happening this time and the only feasible option was to retrace the route back to Tal-y-bont.

Sorry to read you are having other problems that curtail your outings. The scenery on that trip looks stunning as do your photo’s. I’m sure I have been up there but I can’t find any proof of it. Maybe it was before I started blogging. Your post certainly gives me the enthusiasm to go and have another look.
Thanks Alan. Having suffered a DVT years ago, this type of venous ankle problem is likely to recur at intervals, one of those things.
The riverside woodland scenery and clear views from the high ground were very satisfying and made the difficulties well worthwhile.
Sorry to here you are struggling with fitness. As usual though, a great insight to a quieter part of the world and inspiration for my further adventures.
Thanks Steve. The ascents are getting really hard now and even slower due to constant breathlessness. Anyway the important thing is getting out there and finding some nice tent pitches, which always involves a certain amount of climbing to reach high/remote ground, but there are still plenty of short routes that fit the bill.
Despite the disappointment of the early end we really enjoyed that short trip.
